The scientific Russian Academies of Sciences pass into "cloud" of Microsoft
The Russian Academy of Sciences and Microsoft signed the cooperation agreement, providing development of high-performance calculations and cloudy services on the basis of the Microsoft Azure technology
The Microsoft corporation and the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) signed the agreement on the scientific and technical and innovative cooperation providing development of high-performance calculations and cloudy services on the basis of the Microsoft Azure technology. As reported CNews in Microsoft, the hybrid scenario of use of capacities of the Interdepartmental Supercomputer Center (ISC) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and "cloud" of corporation will accelerate creation of an electronic platform for the research work which is carried out by the Russian Academy of Sciences.
It is known that the modeling methods used in science demand processing of large volumes of information, speed, new algorithms of work. The Russian Academy of Sciences interdepartmental supercomputer center is equipped with computers and high-precision processors which help to solve the most difficult problems of predictive modeling. Today MSTs Russian Academy of Sciences unites more than 1000 users from the scientific and educational organizations located across all Russia which solve problems in the field of nanotechnologies, information and telecommunication systems, nuclear power, natural sciences, space systems and rational environmental management. Adaptation of a supercomputer to a wide range of the tasks solved in computers of standard architecture demands high qualification, monetary and time expenditure. Now the solution of the tasks demanding big computing capacities at peak and unpredictable loadings became possible thanks to the cloudy Azure platform, noted in Microsoft.
"We considered local and world suppliers of cloudy services who could offer tools for the solution of the tasks demanding big computing capacities at peak and unpredictable loadings. As a result stopped the choice on the cloudy Microsoft Azure platform offering support of a wide range of computing environments, – Oleg Aladyshev, the MSTs Russian Academy of Sciences main programmer told. – Thereby we release a supercomputer resource for very specific scientific tasks with high degree of connectivity between computing knots and, at the same time, we have an opportunity to render immediate service to community practically without restrictions to scale and resource intensity of tasks, adding the mathematical examination for a problem definition to Azure".
"We expect that we will be able to unload twice computing capacities of a supercomputer of MSTs Russian Academy of Sciences, – the director of MSTs Russian Academy of Sciences, the academician Gennady Savin declared. – These are the data based on profiling of tasks of our current customers. Besides, it is the new ground for working off of decisions for optimization of efficiency of supercalculations from the point of view of a ratio cost productivity".
According to Microsoft, at the moment in MSTs 400 projects are at the same time served. "In Azure service to more wide range of customers from among the industrial enterprises having the tasks connected with predictive modeling" will help us to propose the solution, – the deputy director of MSTs Russian Academy of Sciences Boris Shabanov is sure.
It is remarkable that the scientific Russian Academies of Sciences already have successful experience with cloudy services of Microsoft. So, in May, 2011 started the project in the Siberian office of the Russian Academy of Sciences within which corporate "cloud" of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science on a platform of Microsoft was created. Today his users are more than 3,5 thousand scientists. Thanks to transfer of infrastructure to "cloud" and formation of cloudy services of the organization, the Siberian Branches of the Russian Academy of Science which are a part, got access to uniform resources, tools and data that facilitated performance of joint research work, accelerated processing of information and simplified communications, noted in Microsoft.
